Winter Bark – Drimys winteri – Drimys winteri

Drimys winteri is a very handsome upright tree with large, leathery.. evergreen leaves. The leaves have a peppery smell when crushed but it is the powdered bark that is used as a pepper substitute in South America. A tea from the bark is said to good for ailments of the stomach. The white, slightly fragrant, flowers are held in clusters during the late winter months.
