Is it Gin o'clock yet?
We have an exciting and fruity twist to your standard Gin and Tonic using some of your homegrown Rhubarb. This incredible tasting combination has been made super easy by following our how-to recipe…
Although there are quite a few rhubarb varieties out there that you can grow, after a few flavour tests we found the best flavour came from the variety ‘Red Champagne’. As well as the taste, this variety is harvested later and produces deep red stalks which bring beautiful pink colour to your Rhubarb gin.
Over the years, Gin has become a trendy tipple across the World with small micro distilleries popping up around everyone’s doorsteps. As a botanically based spirit, the flavours and essences can vary quite widely. Although we do not recommend a specific brand of Gin, it may be worth testing a few to see which one you prefer to go with your Rhubarb.
Ingredients
- 5 – 6 Rhubarb stalks (Red champagne variety is preferable)
- Sugar
- Large Jar
- Gin (no preference on the brand)
- Shaved ice (optional)
- Garnish (optional)
- Tonic water (optional)
The good news is that this is very simple and doesn’t require precise measurements, temperatures and all the complexities of some recipes.
- Pick and Harvest roughly 5 to 6 Rhubarb stalks for your Rhubarb Gin.
- Chop the stalks into small pieces using the bottom parts of the stalk. Try using only the deepest pink and red parts of the stalks as these are typically sweeter.
- Place the small pieces of Rhubarb into a large jar until you fill approximately 2/3rds of the jar.
- Cover the rhubarb stalks with sugars and add the Gin.
- Leave the jar in a cool and dark place.
- Label and date the jar for reference.
- Every day or two, shake the jar to all the contents of the jar to move around.
- Do this for approximately six weeks and then your Rhubarb Gin is ready!
Enjoy in Style
You can choose to drink it like you would a slow gin neat, or my preference is to add a good quality tonic water with a light garnish and shaved ice.
Enjoy and drink responsibly! We would love to see your photos so please feel free to send your images via our social media pages which are in the footer of our website!
